Artist Discussion: Thursday 15th of February 6 - 8 pm

Through drawing and painting Joy Labinjo has begun working through ideas for a new body of work. Labinjo’s works draw on her British-Nigerian heritage and examine the complex relationship between identity, race and culture. In Gatherings Labinjo invites the viewer to step into preliminary drawings saturated with colours, patterns and people, reconfigured from her family photograph albums. The drawings s are used as an immediate way to visualise concepts.

In doing this, Labinjo simultaneously connects with personal histories and uproots them, freeing and displacing individuals from a collective narrative, to create a new space of multiple histories and representations.

Joy Labinjo (b.1994) studied BA Fine Art at Newcastle University graduating in 2017. She was awarded the Woon Foundation Art Prize in 2017. Recent exhibitions include ‘Ladies who Lunch’, Holy Biscuit, February 2017 Newcastle. ‘Where do we go from here?’ , XL Gallery, October 2017 Newcastle. Belonging, Morley Gallery, January 2018 London.
